Cheddite 12ga 3” Tungsten & Steel Duplex: Part 1

We’ve been brainstorming on tungsten/steel duplex loads with our friend, Chris Holt. As Chris knows very well, the game-changing physics of 18.0 density tungsten has the ability to supercharge the performance of non-toxic hunting loads. Chris wanted a relatively simple load with a solid fit in the wad. We both tinkered a bit with different variations, but we arrived at the 547-grain payload with one 20ga 1/8” Felt wad. It was a perfect fit with ideal ballistic balance.

Why it works: Wads for hard, abrasive steel shot have traditionally been designed around the volumes created by steel shot loads. Duplexing two very different shot densities allows us to utilize the proper volume of the wad and shell. The 18.0 tungsten infuses super-charged steroids into the performance of the load. However, with that super-charged power comes responsibility: You, the reloader, must be absolutely meticulous with exact charge weights and loading procedure. Because of its density, even a single tungsten pellet can disrupt the integrity of these loads.

 

Duplex loads should only be loaded by experienced reloaders. If you are a beginner, then do NOT start with this load. You MUST use a scale. Your shot amounts must not exceed what is listed below. Let’s start this LOTW with the obvious statement: NO SUBSTITUTIONS, because the result of any substitution is an untested load; An untested load produces unknown results.

PROPELLANT:  Alliant Steel® 33.0 grains

WAD: TPS 1275 (#3227701) slit 4x with 20ga 1/8” Felt Wad (#1221820) in wad base.

SHOT DROP #1 (bottom): 130 grains STSS Tungsten 18.0 gr/cc (#7)

SHOT DROP #2 (top): 417 grains BPI Zinc-Plated Steel Shot (#1)

SHOT DROP TOTAL: Not to exceed 547 grains

FOLD CRIMP:  with OS12 overshot

RESULTS: 1414 FPS (muzzle) | 11,258 PSI
