LOAD OF THE WEEK
.410 Slug & Buck Loads
These loads are a salute to Leon Guthrie and his Facebook crew
of impassioned slug and buckshot reloaders. Our lab has been
working on some new .410 loads for a special article in
Shotgun Sports magazine. What’s that? You are an
avid shotgunner and/or reloader but you do not read
Shotgun Sports? Well, you are missing out on
something significant. You must remedy the situation.

The popularity of the simple single shot hammer .410 as a home
defense option as well as the development of the
aforementioned Judge and Governor have raised interest in
goblin-repelling .410 loads. The Reloading Curmudgeon
responded with a lineup of his own “Judgement” handloads,
packing a potent five pellets of #00-buckshot :

Hodgdon Lil Gun® 13.0 grains

[Slug load]
Europeans have long utilized their .410s (or 36 gauges) with
diminutive slugs to pursue game such as “cinghiale.”
Chinghiale are small feral pigs, loathed in Italian
vineyards because of their enormous appetite for delicious
and awfully expensive grapes.
We call this .410 solution for pig problems (and
other smaller than deer-sized game) “ the .410 Thug Slug.”
This 125-grain slug at 1723 FPS might just save your
next bottle of Brunello di Montalcino from the
voracious marauding hordes of wild boar:
